Master Musician | Sevilya Hendrickx

My name is Sevilya Hendrickx and I am a master music instructor at The Vancouver Island Conservatory of Music & Arts.

I was born into a musical family. Both of my parents are professional musicians and music teachers as well as my beloved grandmother who was a famous folk singer. My love and passion for music and art came to me naturally, as I was exposed to it at a very young age, I believe even before I could speak. My parents along with their friends and colleagues introduced me to opera, jazz, folk and symphonic music which expanded my vision and approach to music and education in general.

At the age of seven I was playing solo violin with an orchestra and I already had no doubt of what I wanted my career to look like. The music, the stage, the applause! It gave me the most exciting and confident feeling!  I was lucky to study music in Moscow, Russia and The Hague in The Netherlands, as both countries have incredibly rich history of music and culture.  In Moscow, I graduated with distinction from Gnessin State Musical College followed by Gnessin Academy of Music.  In the Netherlands, I graduated from the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. I hold a Bachelors and Masters Degree, both with distinction.

I have performed in many of the worlds greatest concert halls, such as Great Hall of The Moscow Conservatory, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, and Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona. I can proudly call myself an experienced solo, chamber, and orchestral player.  For the last few years I dedicated my career to symphony orchestras such as The Residentie Orkest in The Netherlands and Nanaimo Symphony Orchestra.

Along with my performing career I have a love and passion for teaching.  I am a certified member of the BC Registered Music Teachers Association and currently completed my Suzuki Teacher Training.

Recently I became a mother and moved with my family to Port Alberni, BC. Being a parent myself I particularly realize how important the role of arts and culture play in a balanced child development,  and how unfortunate it is for children who don’t have access to it. It's my duty to pass on all the priceless knowledge that has been given to me throughout my life.
